On 1 May 2024, Companies House, the UK registrar of companies, increased the fee required to incorporate a company from £12 to £50.

Several other company filing fees have been affected. Here is a list of the key fee changes:

  • registering a company – £12 to £50
  • registering a company on the same day – £30 to £78
  • filing a confirmation statement – £13 to £34
  • changing a company name – £8 to £20
  • and dissolving a company – £8 to £33

In turn, this has meant that we have had to immediately increase the price of our services that require a Companies House filing fee, including our company formation packages.

Why have Companies House increased their filing fees?

As part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, Companies House have been given additional powers relating to ‘investigation, intelligence and enforcement of anti-money laundering and economic crime prevention’. Funds generated through the price increase will enable Companies House (and the Insolvency Service) to do this.

Generally speaking, these additional powers and the price increase mean that:

How will this impact business owners?

Whilst the additional cost involved in setting up and then running a limited company compliantly may deter a handful of would be-entrepreneurs, the strength of the limited company structure will be bolstered, as it is less likely to be compromised by individuals and groups who wish to use it for illegitimate purposes.

Combine this robustness with the existing benefits of the structure, such as ease of set up, limited liability, prestigious business model and tax efficiency, and the limited company remains the premier business structure for people who want to get their new business off to the best possible start.
