In conversation with Andrew Green

I started Andrew Green Technology Services after spending most of my career in technology-focused roles within financial services. My last company faced issues due to COVID-19 and went into liquidation, so I took some time off to reassess.

As businesses began reopening, I was frustrated by the push to get people back into the office, ignoring what we’d learned about the benefits of technology and hybrid working. That’s when I decided to launch my own business as an independent IT consultant, focusing on modern, flexible solutions.

Inspirations

The idea for my business came from wanting more control over my career and work environment. After COVID, I was really unhappy with the lack of flexibility in many companies. I wanted to create something that not only worked for me but also embraced the potential of remote and hybrid working. Setting up as a limited company also provided the added benefit of limited liability protection, which was important to me.

The Journey

It’s been a great journey so far. I’ve worked on several contracts, and the first couple of years have gone better than I expected. The flexibility I’ve gained by running my own business has been incredibly rewarding.

The Growth Curve

When I started, I set a personal income target, and that’s been my focus. Running a personal services company means I have full control over how much I work and, as a result, how much I earn. Being able to balance work with downtime has allowed me to meet my goals while maintaining the flexibility I value.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges has been learning all the ins and outs of running a business. As a company director, I’m responsible for everything, so I’ve spent a lot of time learning about payroll, understanding IR35, and generally getting to grips with the business side of things. These are all things I didn’t have to worry about when I was an employee, but they’re crucial now.

Highlights

What I enjoy most about running my own business is the freedom. Being my own boss means I have control over my schedule, the projects I take on, and how I run things. It’s incredibly satisfying to be able to make decisions without having to answer to anyone else.

The Future

I see more of the same in the future—taking on contract work that interests me and continuing to enjoy the flexibility I’ve built into my life. I plan to keep balancing work with periods of downtime and relaxation.

Advice

For anyone thinking of starting their own business, I’d say do your research. It’s important to understand the advice you’re getting from your accountants and financial advisors—don’t just rely on them to do everything for you. The more you get involved in the details, the more rewarding it is. I’d also recommend signing up for HMRC webinars to get a handle on the tax and compliance side of things. It’s a great way to feel confident when dealing with your accountants.
